I'd still use the draft, but I assumed it would be heavily edited for anonymity -- pretty much goes without saying, I thought.

I agree with this. I would just send out something where the final draft reasonably reflects your work.

I have a similar problem in house. Most documents are either edited multiple times, or too proprietary to use. I'm left with project documetns that are pretty boring!

Every memo or brief I've done is collaborative, as in either I do a draft and then it is edited many times by one or more attorneys, or I write small pieces of briefs or memos or no the whole thing. That's just the way it is in my practice group and at my level. So what can I use as a writing sample?
