Schools do not influence your child with a liberal or conservative curriculum. They get that from you. The liberal parents get to know one another and so do the others. You can find a nice centrist view in most of the schools. I think children will apply what they know and form their own views in later years.

A few years ago, they were very intent on raising the school's profile by admitting wealthy and high status parents. The middle school Ad was particularly known for her attention to status. I haven't had much contact with the school for 2-3 years, so I don't know how this is working out today.

I am just reading this post - I hate to bring back an old topic, but my question, related to this, is whether or not a conservative family would feel comfortable at Maret. We love what we have seen as prosepctive parents in terms of the focus on art, the creativity of the teachers and the warmth of the parents. We did immediately get the impression that Maret is liberal, without googling the board members or doing much research on that in particular. I am just wondering if our conservative values would isolate our child and if so, at what age would you say this would become an issue? My question is truly genuine and is geared more toward people with firsthand experiences at Maret and not for those who have "heard" things through the grapevine.

This describes virtually every independent school in the area. The "club" part.

Maret has replaced Sidwell upper school as my new obsession. I never expected this and my middle school child is unlikely to ever attend. Why is it hitting me now???

Not sure what your view of unimpressive is unless it's excellent faculty, thoughtful curriculum and well-run. The students seem genuinely happy and have great college placements. In addition, the school has a good 'vibe' to it. Almost every person I knew said, 'oh, we loved that school,' when we were looking at it. I'll take that unimpressive for my kids. Do I think there are other excellent schools in this city? Yes. That's why I never understand the utterly immature arguing on this board about the "best" schools. There are many great schools in this area, public and private.

How many K-12 schools are there in DC, total? Three? Maret is one of them. It has a nice-looking, traditional, campus smack in the middle of one of the most affluent parts of NW DC. There are your answers. The quality of the school is incidental to a lot of wide-eyed upwardly-mobile parents in DC trying to figure this all out.
