WePo class of 93. Can only go on what I hear now. Definitely not one of the best FFX high schools. I actually have no idea what it was considered then.

I graduated from West Potomac more years ago than I care to admit (but I was the second class that never went to either Groveton or Ft. Hunt if that gives it away for anyone). I went on to an excellent college and had a great job until I got married and took on the most rewarding job that I have ever had. Mommy.

It used to be an EXCELLENT school, but from everything I have read, it isn't as great as it once was. Guess I shouldn't be surprised. It was a long time ago that I wandered the halls in jelly bracelets, sweater dresses, long shirts with leggings and big chunky belts and big hair. Wait....All that stuff is back in again!

These are the types of statements that always amaze me. West Potomac is considered a great school nationally in terms of its academics. Does it score as high as Langley/McLean? No. But knowing some kids who go to those schools, I have to say I'm glad I'm not sending my kids to such a pressure cooker.

If you are interested in your child receiving a solid academic education, while still be exposed to diversity at all levels - religous, socio-economic, racial, then you should consider West Potomac as a fine school to send your kids to. If you can't look past average test scores or the percentage of FARMs students, then there are better schools. But people - don't kid yourself into thinking that your specific kid is going to get a better education at Langley than at West Potomac. It just isn't true. The teachers on average are NOT better and WestPo will have the same number of IB/AP course offerings.

WestPo has no IB program. It does have nearly as many AP course offerings as Langley. Those at WestPo who load up on 4-5 AP courses every semester are probably as likely as a similar Langley student to feel some academic pressure.

I went to a different lower tier Ffx HS and friends and I all received fantastic education and went on to great universities. It was also a very diverse HS which I think I preferred then a bunch of mean girl---all the same backgrounds and socioeconomic status. It was good to be around all types of people.

That said--would I purposely buy a house that feeds into WP....prob not. If I were already there I wouldn't move away though.

This has been discussed here on DCUM so do a search if you haven't already. Be sure and include WestPo in it as well.

Don't have kids there yet but know plenty who do and they find it to be fine. It's a melting pot of various ethnic and socioeconomic groups with plenty of competitive college bound students and some kids that aren't likely to go on past HS or jr. college. I spend a lot of time up there for various activities and all the kids I've ever come across are friendly and respectful and helpful if asked.
