I think it totally matters whether the tree is near a house, fence, street, access, etc. I'd think a big tree that a tree company can just drop in a big yard might be $1,000 whereas the same tree in a backyard, with houses and fences nearby, could easily be $3,000.

$2,800 for a big, tall, and wide-canopied oak tree with a trunk about 3 feet across.

we paid $6000 for a tree that was about ~5 feet across at the stump. Required a crane to lift pieces over the house. It was a BIG tree close to the house.

You can get a free estimate. We had a large tree that would have been $800 - needs to be taken down by climbing up and then piece by piece.

estimates are free, call some companies. Our tree cost $800 to remove. My friend had a big tree and it cost $2500 to remove. Depends on size and accessibility, time of year etc. I think you already missed the winter discount season.

$2500 for a large maple tree, maybe 60 or more feet high, and about 3 feet in diameter. Got six estimates, and they all were within a few hundred dollars of each other. Odd. We chose the guy we liked best, and we were happy with the job he did. It took them an entire day to take down the tree, and a second half-day to grind the stump. They took away all the debris also.

Make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured. Have them give you an insurance certificate made out to you. If one of their guys falls and hurts himself on your property, you want to make sure that you are protected.

$6000 for an enormous 150 year old tree that was in such a spot they had to do it by hand. Cherry picker couldn't get to it.

We paid $2500 for a large tree. Cheapest quote, but shoddy work.

$4,000 for a tree big enough to tower over a house.

Depends if they can use a crane or if guys need to climb up and slice it down.

Our huge old maple in the backyard was $2400. It took 3 days and several men climbing and slicing disks of it. This was the least expensive of our estimates. Licensed and bonded.

We have large pine trees in our yard, and the estimates to take them down have been $1300 - $1600 each, with stump grinding. OP, some of the price will probably depend on how easy it is to get the equipment close to the tree.

Most tree services will come out and give you a free estimate.

Totally depends what you mean by large. We have removed a couple of pine trees since we moved into our house - each was a few hundred dollars plus more if you want the stump ground, maybe $600-800 total for each. These were licensced arborists in both cases, neither tree was taller than our 2 story house. On the other hand, our three large trees cost $1500 plus just for pruning, and we've been told that the really big one could cost as much as $10k to remove because it would require a crane.

Cost us $900 for canopy trimming for 3 tall trees from a reputable company on Angies List.

on another occasion:
Cost us $250 for stump removal "under the table" for 2 large stumps. We saw then working in a neighbors yard and asked if they'd come do ours while they were at it. Made the check out to cash but it saved us a ton of money.

So, probably somewhere in between....

We have a large tree on our property for a couple years, that is now ailing and doesn't seem like it will improve. It is leaning to one side. What is the cost range for having the tree cut down, without stump removal?
