Here's a link to the catalog for the general summer school program for the whole county (it's got elementary, middle, and high school info). http://www.apsva.us/cms/lib2/VA01000586/Centricity/Domain/80/SS%20Catalog2012Final.pdf

The elementary summer stuff starts on page 10. The "reading camp" as they call it is for kids who received special ed reading services and are at least one grade level below average, so that may not be a good fit for you. They do also have a general program that's half math, half language arts - it's only three hours a day (extended day is an option if you need it) that can just keep up general skill level. We did that last year - it definitely maintains, but I wouldn't call it intensive enough to necessarily teach. I believe they try to group the kids according to skill, so if your child is more or less advanced they will be with peers.

My son is signed up for all 'sports camps' this summer and we've been looking for something to supplement and not have him lose everything he's gained this year in academics. Not super intense--but just some supplement.

Do you have a link for the reading intensive summer program? We are in Arlington too.

Does anyone have a child who has participated in the Arlington County summer school program geared towards reading assistance? I don't mean regular summer school, just the reading intensive program?

I'm trying to decide where to put my son for the summer - regular summer school + tutor or summer school reading program and have a few pros and cons for each. I'm familiar with the regular summer school program, but not the reading one so if anyone has any insights (was it helpful? what kind of work did they do?) I'd appreciate it.

I've also started a thread on the special needs board (titled something about a Lab School tutor, as that's what we'd do for tutoring) so if you've replied there no need to also reply here.

Thank you all in advance for your thoughts.
