OP here - thanks guys.

I've decided to do sandwich trays (premade) for the adults (one big deli-style sandwich, one assorted wraps platter). I've also ruled out any allergies for the kids, thanks to the awesome all-knowing teachers (the one kid with a peanut allergy isn't coming). And I decided against bringing alcohol.

I do plan to make one kind of sandwich for all the kids. I need a vote:
- turkey and american
OR
- ham and cheddar

Agree with 23:12 as well. Just one kind of sandwich. If the kids don't like it, you are having other snacks available so they won't starve. Also, it will still be early enough after the party ends that the parents can feed them lunch at home or on the way home.

I disagree with the PP. Just make one type of sandwich so there is no fighting, aruging or kids changing their minds. Find out if there are any allergies before hand. I'm sure if this is your son's class you know who has allergies or you could at least ask the teachers or parents. And you may want to buy those pre sliced apple slices for the kids instead of whole apples. Too hard to eat and a lot will get wasted.

I would also not include the alcohol. Way too early in the day and not necessary at a 4 yr olds bday party. If parents want a drink they can have it at home.

My suggestion if you are going to do sandwiches. I would make several of each type of sandwich and have them ready to go with all the rest (apples, crackers, whatever) already in the lunchboxes. Then when the kids show up, ask them what sandwich they like, tell them the list. When they choose, put a sandwich into one of the boxes, put the kid's name on it and then set it aside for lunch. At lunchtime, just hand out the name-labeled boxes. That way each kid gets the sandwich they want. After all the kids arrive, put the leftover pre-made sandwiches out with the deli tray for the parents. Some will prefer to take a pre-made sandwich to fixing one for themselves. This also helps you avoid any allergy issue by not putting any sandwiches into a lunchbox until the kid says which one. You can keep any potential allergens (like PB) away from a kid who may be allergic and his lunchbox.

I love this idea.

The only caveat would be checking for food allergies (e.g. peanut butter).

I'm hungry that early too b/c I'm on my kids' schedule. I think what you've planned sounds great.

It sounds cute, OP. Sandwiches will be fine. Have fun.

OP here - we are doing lunch since it's my son's preschool class, and at school they eat at 11:15/11:30. So we'll be doing activities for the first hour, then lunch/cake.

And personally I am always hungry when my kids are, so I am assuming that the parents will be the same. If not, then that's fine, they don't have to eat.

If I see a party for 10-12 I don't automatically assume lunch.

You could do bagels/cream cheese, fruit, fish crackers, and pretzels. If they are running around, most won't probably want to sit and eat a full lunch meal.

As far as the parents, I think the same. You don't need sandwiches at 10. Have some snacks, soda and coffee. I don't think the alcohol is necessary.

We are having a birthday party from 10am-12noon this weekend and will of course be serving lunch.

For the kids, I am thinking of getting some 'chinese takeout' containers from the Party Store and making them each their own boxed lunches. It would just be so much easier with logistics (these are 4 yos). Some questions:
- should I make them all the same (e.g. turkey/chedder or PB&J), or have various kinds for them to choose from? (the only allergy i know of is an egg allergy)
- what should I put in them? I am thinking: sandwich, an apple, cheese cracker sandwiches, juice box.

For the adults, I was going to put together a deli tray for a make-your-own sandwich deal, along with a veggie tray and fruit/cheese tray. Should I offer alcohol like wine or mimosas, or kahlua/baileys to add to coffee? (the place is BYOB) There will be 15 4 yo's running around and I could see us needing something to take the edge off
