You tell the many struggling minority actors who can't find work or even get casting calls due to no roles available for them that race has nothing to do with it. And the roles that are available are maids, drug dealers, drug attacks, and other demeaning roles. Hattie McDaniel won a Academy in 1939 for playing a slave maid and 73 years later Viola Davis is nominated for portraying the same role. I understand economics plays a significant role, as Hollywood wants to make money, but race does as well.

They gave the best supporting actress award to an AA woman, but couldn't find the votes to give best actress to Viola Davis over perennial favorite Streep. Streep didn't deserve it, and she knew it. The Members of the Academy vote for their choice and as many of them are AA, I don't think it is racist. Personally, I thought Glen Close should win but that VDavis would win. However, look at all the awards Streep won this year and it didn't come as a surprise that she won. Race had nothing to do with the outcome. Contrary to how your thinking, everything isn't black and white.

I think it's racist that you feel Streep shouldn't have one. By the way..she hasn't won since 1982 and has been nominated without a win several times since then so it's not like she always wins. I will also argue that portraying a real life character is harder than making up one as there is tons of footage of Mrs. Thatcher to compare and say...ah no she didn't hit it if that was the case. In the end..these are all great actors and being nominated is an honor win or lose..relax.

Meryl Streep herself knew she shouldn't have won. She's been there, done that so many times that I don't think she cares anymore.

I totally disagree. Octavia did a lot of mugging, and she had a juicy role to play with. Davis had a harder job with a much tougher, more understated role, and she pulled it off with perfection. She deserved the Oscar, no question.

Viola Davis should have won, she's brilliant and I say this as someone who adores Meryl Streep. Viola was also nominated a few years ago in the movie Doubt, along with Meryl co-incidentally. Yes she was robbed. Maybe they should just have given it to Glenn Close.

Octavia was better than Viola in The Help, she brought the funny but Viola did have a great performance. I did not see Meryl's but I knew she would win.

It reminded me of when Jessica Lange lost out to Meryl Streep many years ago. Jessica Lange was awesome, but it was the year of Sophie's Choice, and Meryl Streep was transcendant. Any other year, and Jessica Lange would have won probably. Except this time, I think it was reversed. Streep gave an excellent performance, but Davis was just that step above, and should have won.

The academy isn't racist. It was supposedly a tight race between the two, so it was at best a mild upset (I think Streep herself was the most surprised person in the room, her reaction was hilarious). This wasn't some gasp-inducing upset like when the good but forgettable "Crash" beat "Brokeback Mountain," which had won virtually every precursor award, for Best Picture in 2006 or so. That's the kind of situation where it appears an agenda is in play.

I was shocked Viola Davis lost to Meryl Streep last night. What's that about? Is the Academy racist? Honestly, Streep is a great actress, but her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher was an imitation, whereas Viola Davis created a flesh and blood character that was as moving as any performance I've ever seen.

The Academy ought to be ashamed of itself.
