The Johnson people certainly know the Oscars audience.

I liked it, thought it was super sweet (and very cute with all the babies).

Whatever.

"You're doing okay, Mom"? ? ?

Kind of obnoxious.

While it was poignant and touching, in the back of my mind, I still get annoyed by "how far we've come and yet how far we have to go." Despite something like 10-11 babies, only 2 were black, none were hispanic and none were Asian. And yet companies that advertise predominantly white always complain about how they want to make inroads into appealing more to the minority market (there's a lot of money to be made there) and yet they cannot make the simple mental leap that you need to include those minorities in your advertising?

Yeah, since I've had kids I can tear up at a McDonald's commercial. But this Johnson's ad did nothing for me. I think it was just too overt. No voice over and maybe just printed "thank you mom" would have been more subtle and more effective IMO.

Of course they're corny. The emotionality is that I can find the parallels in my own experiences, and I have empathy for people. Are you seriously so hard that you can't see how these might be touching?

No, and in fact, I cry at many Hallmark commercials. I just thought the Johnson commercial was corny.

The Johnson's ad didn't do much for me, but yes, there was one Hallmark commercial that had me running for a tissue. Something about an elderly person making her slow, painstaking way down to the mailbox, only to find it was empty. And then her joy on a subsequent day when someone sent her a card. It was years ago, but man, that one got me going.

"I appreciate you.." because you use Johnson's. But if you ever buy the store brand, we are SO over.

It's kind of poignant, really, that some babies smiling and the voiceover saying, "You're doing okay, Mom" affects me so much.
