A kid that misses 19 days of school should be made to repeat the grade. That's basically the equivalent of an entire school month.

However, missing the LAST 19 days of school is equivalent of missing only about 5 days' of schoolwork.

He cares! That's why he is trying to find out the limits of the game... duh...

you care enough about his education to fuss over this in-pool nonsense but you'll take him out of school for a month? either you care about playing the school game or you don't, you know?

If it will not be 15 consecutive days, then I think you would be ok.

Will he be missing 19 school days for the wedding? Or 19 days total this year, which includes X days for the wedding?

After missing 15 days of school or more, a child is no longer enrolled. You would need to re-enroll when you return. I would definitely speak to your principal about this.

Talk with the teacher and principal. I assume you'd leave last week of May and your son wouldn't return to school again until August for 2nd grade?

I would simply plan on doing a parent referral for him in 2nd grade and you can explain your absence at the end of 1st grade. You can parent refer him even if he is in the 2nd grade pool.

We have an important marriage ceremony to attend in the last week of MAY 2012.
I read somewhere that first grade progress report will be sent along with other documents to AAP committee.
Is 19 days absence in first grade progress report going to be red flag?
I am not sure what AAP committee looks into. I do not want to hurt his chances of getting into GT.

I appreciate your advice on this.
Thanks

I will thank you all for your valuable input about AAP.

My son is in 1st grade. He has scored 99% in NNAT2. His teacher says that he is overall a good student.
We wanted to make a trip abroad during the last week of MAY 2012.
He would be missing around 19 days of school.
I would like to know if it in way affect his chances of getting into AAP.
I know that he has a long way to get into GT.
He needs to get good scores in COGAT and also high GBRS.

Your advise on things is appreciated.
Thanks

I think he would simply be withdrawn from FCPS and you would have to reenroll him.

http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/8KSQJE6808AC/$file/R2234.pdf

E. Mandatory Withdrawal
In order to comply with state recordkeeping requirements, students shall be withdrawn
from FCPS student membership rolls after 15 consecutive days of absence regardless of
whether their absences are excused or unexcused. Withdrawn students are not
excused from mandatory school attendance requirements and are expected to reenroll
as soon as possible. Students who withdraw to attend a non-FCPS school should notify
FCPS as soon as possible.

You can't wait a month and go when school is out?
