op here - Sometimes! Yikes, I thought it was just a simple question. It was her first going to school ( she didn't know - I wasn't being nosy, she told me but was curious). I have a 9th grader so we aren't there yet - I was just asking hoping to get info on the experience of others. Honestly read my post 3 times and tried to figure out how it could possibly generate the few nasty responses it did. Wow.

To the poster with the last link, thank you, that was very informative and interesting - I hadn't thought to google that particular question. Probably a safer bet than asking the nice folks here.

Really, why are people so quick to vilify others here for no reason? If I asked you the same question face to face in the grocery store would you be so nasty? Upbringing shows when the lights are out.


OP, FWIW, I'm not sure why your posted generated some nasty response but after reading this I went back and re-read your orginial post too. Maybe (just IMO) giving a bit more info such as "my neighbor's son showed me his postcard.... he didn't know what it meant either.... would indicate that the posting stemmed from a discussion you had with the child involved and not that you were fishing for information on whether or not your neighbor's child got accepted at W&M.

Also, FWIW, this is pretty mild... you should venture over to the Private school list sometime... those toddler moms are a tough bunch lol...

I'm not knocking you but just sharing IMHO.

Wow - so according to College Confidential these likely letters/postcards are more common among some of the top schools although go to a small percentage of actual admitted students. Interesting development in college land.

My DD was accepted to William and Mary last year. She did not get a postcard, just the admission letter.
I don't know anything about a postcard but it sounds weird that a school would send and postcard saying "we are admitting you but not telling you formally till later".
Even early decisions were via letter last year. Not saying it may not have changed since then.
Did your neighbor tell you that's what the card was?

Not necessarily. Perhaps OP would like the info for future reference when her child applies to college, but does not want to discuss it with her neighbor during this very stressful time.

"this very stressful time" the neighbor kid is applying for college, don't act like someone just died or got a terminal diagnosis. Thousands and thousands of people apply for school every year. Choices are pretty simple:
1) be a big girl and ask your neighbor
2) if it means that much to you, call the school and ask
3) If her kid is applying to William and Mary in a future year, then ask when applying

Are you sure it didn't just say the app was complete and they'd be hearing later? Although that's all online now so unlikely there would be a mailing. Never heard of this from a college but my DC did not apply to W&M.

My neighbor got a postcard from William and Mary basically saying you are accepted but we'll be telling you for real later. Is that the norm with many schools? It was a cute card but rather cryptic but they think it means he is in?
