These are great tips. Thank you all. I will check out the neighborhoods in the coming year, we are planning to move spring 2013.

I want to have a short list to focus on.

One more question, it's about schools. I know most people are very happy with their elementary schools on the east side of the county, but what about the middle schools and high schools? Any thoughts?

Woodside or North Woodside - I live in the former and it's definitely laid back and a mix of incomes, jobs, ages, say/woh. Don't let people tell you it's too pricey, our house is under $400k but there is a $1.2 million house on the corner. Close to metro and downtown SS. We know all the neighbors in our block and most in the neighborhood, active civic assoc, generally friendly look out for others type of people.

Carroll Knolls/Mckenney Hills is nice. Very friendly neighborhood, two parks, new elementary school (scheduled for 2012) and a mix of backgrounds. Easy walk to Forest Glen metro.

Do you live there? Is it laid back? I am looking for the kind of neighborhood where there are a mix of SAHM/SAHD and WOHM/WOHD and different kinds of careers -- not just go-go-go lawyers and type-As.

Yes. It is laid back and a nice mix of people. Tons of kids. Half a mile from the metro. We have a farmers market in the neighborhood (in Getty park) and there is a great pool across Georgia.

Thanks for the tip. My DH says >1 mile to the metro is a deal breaker, so that's our only real "must have."

Indian Spring is great. It is a little more than a mile from Metro, but has good bus service to to Silver Spring and Takoma metro stops.

We are looking to move to either Kensington or SS. We want to be within a mile of the metro and in a laid-back kid-friendly neighborhood, with sidewalks.

We would love to be near shops and a library too! But most important is a nice community with friendly neighbors. Any suggestions?
