My husband mentioned BAFB, my mistake, we don't need access to it.

We are relocating from Southern Oregon, a small town named Ashland, 5 hours south of Portland & approximately 20 miles from the border of Oregon & California.
The town is known mainly for "The Oregon Shakespeare Festival".

Ok then. No need to live anywhere near Bolling. Do your commissary at Ft. Meyer or Ft. Belvior, medical care at Family Health Center of Fairfax on Prosperity, Ft. Belvior or even Bethesda (depending on where you live). There really is no reason for you to go to Bolling.

Move somewhere convenient to the job in Reston.

I agree. It's a great central location, and you could be right off the beltway, 66, or both.

I will be relocating this summer to VA to join my spouse who has been working in DC this last year.
Our 14 y/o daughter will be entering HS in the Fall, we have no idea which one.

To be frank, I'm overwhelmed & confused about how the schools work in VA.
I feel like a very small fish entering a HUGE pond!

I need to know if there is pre-established criteria, test scores, etc, that my daughter must have to attend a school. I also don't understand some of the abbreviations
I've seen on posts.

I've read through posts on the forum & have seen that any post requesting assistance to locate "the best" school can lead to not so nice results.
I know that each person has their own individual reasons for what is "best".

I'll be honest, I don't comprehend the hype about test results & scores that HS's tout.
I don't believe test scores & results "really" reflect the types of kids attending the schools or their families.

In the past we used school "report cards" to assist us in choosing a school for our daughter & were less then thrilled with the results & transferred her within 2 months.

Where we currently reside we only have 1 middle school & 1 HS. The HS has less then 1300 kids attending for 4 grades.

I would ultimately like to find a HS that is similar to the one in our community.
I've been looking at attendance numbers for HS's and am floored at the huge numbers attending these schools. I'd love to find something similar to where we are currently living.

The other requirement is that the area & school be within 1 hour commute to Reston & Boling AFB.
Residing in Maryland isn't an option, our son will be attending his first year of college in VA.

We won't be purchasing a home, only renting. This decision allows our daughter to have an uninterrupted 4 years of HS.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

OP, why do you need acces to Bolling? Commissary? Docs? If those are the only reason there are several other options that do not involve crossing that bridge (such as Ft. Belvior and the military family health clinics.

I'm amazed at all of your responses! Thank You!!

In regards to the questions;

Budget-$2500 (I feel poor saying this! The housing market out there is insane compared to here!)

SFH-I'll be dead honest & say house, we've got fur kids & house would make life much easier, but if it came down to it & we had to take an apartment,TH or condo, so be it.

My husband is based in Reston, with projects potentially anywhere in the DC area

I've been a SAHM, I'm not sure what I'll do once we've relocated. Volunteer, work, or perhaps head back to school.
I would like to be close to some kind of public transportation, I like to explore museums, the city etc.

My spouse was in the military, but we didn't ever have to move. That is so neat though! I'm going to tuck that away in case we know other people who are relocating out here

Once again, THANK YOU!!
The information I'm receiving from all of you is SO helpful!

If you are military, there is a very large military community of all branches in West Springfield. Chances are very good that you will run into people around the neighborhood and schools that you have been stationed with before. I know my kids were thrilled to have friends from past assignments and other military kids around school and town. I don't have kids in hs, but I believe that West Springfield High is smaller than some in the area.

I think your best bet commute-wise is Arlington (North Arlington is generally considered to have some of the best schools in the area - Yorktown and Washinigton-Lee HS pyramids). Falls Church City has its own highly regarded small school system and would also be convenient for you (22046 zip). As would Fairfax County's McLean HS pyramid, especially the areas close to Falls Church (22043 zip)

You need to answer the following questions before you can get a quality answer:

1) What is your budget?
2) SFH only or are you willing to consider a townhome or condo?
3) Does one parent work in Reston and the other at Bolling?

If #3 is correct, you probably want to live in Fairfax County, possibly Reston itself. The spouse commuting to Bolling will have a murderous commute, but the strategy would be to make that pain be suffered by only 1 commuter.

Can you afford to live in Fairfax County? What is your budget for housing?
