but where do i start? with the school board i guess? put together my "case" and go to individual school board members to solicit their support? or the superintendent or his staff? don't think i'm the first one with this thought so maybe they've looked at this before?

The Spanish immersion schools have been very popular in Arlington - I would imagine Chinese would be also. Now is the time to plant the seed, as APS is discussing how to create more classrooms/seats for students. Some of the discussion involve creating and enlarging existing schools and this might be one idea for a new school or county-wide program.

One of the proposals is to build a new elementary school at Lubber Run, which is literally across the street from Barrett. Seems to me that would be a great opportunity to offer a new magnet/county-wide program to differentiate from the existing neighborhood school.

I'm imagine Arlington parents would flock to the school. The ones in DC and MoCo are hugely popular....

Not the PP with the niece, but I know the school district. The school is Glenwood Elementary in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District. After elementary, they go on to McDougle Middle School and then on to Chapel Hill High.

That said, with the capacity issues and talk of reopening Madison Center, I think it makes sense to make that a countwide school. Certainly not Chinese immersion -- wouldn't be enough interest. But maybe like an arts school or something.

There would absolutly be enough interest. Hard to find teachers I'd assume is the real reason....

I agree. There has to be interest. i mean my neice goes to a Chinese immersion school in Chapel Hill NC. and had to enter a lottery to get in. I have to imagine that if there is interest there there would be interest here.

I think there could be definite interest, but finding the qualified teachers might be a challenge. It might be easier to start with trying to institute a FLES program in Chinese at a new school or, if the magic money fairy adds to the budget so that FLES can be reinstituted at schools that are on the current wait list, see about advocating for Chinese to be the language taught at one of those schools.

no big deal if no interests. but i get your point that it might be another viable county-wide option the county could sell to parents to to relief neighborhood school overcrowding. it's the same school of thought to designate Boston-Hoffman a STEM school to jack up enrollment interests for in and out of bound families.

FCPS does NOT have Chinese immersion. They have Japanese, French, Spanish, and German. They do have some FLES (foreign language in the schools) programs in Chinese, but it is nowhere near an immersion program. Montgomery County does have it.
