My DC is not in school yet, but I am a little shocked to hear that it is taught so late overall, rather than the first and only way to write, since you don't need to learn to write print, if you learn cursive. You can switch to print automatically later, it appears like a double effort for the child the way they are doing it now.

Barely taught in Prince George's County : a little in 2nd grade; a little in 3rd grade, but no serious attempt at instruction.

FCPS taught in 3rd grade, but they didn't spend much time on it. DD (4th) can do it, but isn't comfortable in it.

MoCo also and for my middle kid, third grade. Due to extenuating circumstances, my oldest was never taught cursive. But, it so impeded his ability to keep up with school work that in seventh grade, the school taught him cursive writing.

Yes, I agree! How would you take notes otherwise?

I remember learning cursive handwriting, started in kindergarten. I did not grow up here. Being only able to write 'print' in my mind was always associated with meaning one can barely read and write... I recently went to an elementary school and was very surprised to see all the little essay displays and such; all in 'print', is this not taught anymore?

Yes. Third grade. DD is very proud of herself for learning it too!
