There's a recent study going around that was featured on the popular news sites as well as the Today Show about how even women in their 20s have problems from wearing high heels, so not just older women. Heels shorten the muscles or something.
I wear maybe 2 inch heels at work sometimes, but never commuting (walking from metro or to meeting, or walking to get lunch, etc.). And on weekends I'm typically in sneakers. And if I know I'm going to be in a business/professional setting that requires me to walk around (like at a conference or something) I'll typically wear flats or very low heels. You are right - it's just not worth it!
