Thank goodness this child is all right but her mother bears the fault. Who, in their right mind, leaves a 7 yr. old to "play" in the toy aisle while you go two aisles over and you can't see your child. She bears the blame and if I were her DH, I would raise holy hell for doing something this stupid and dangerous and it would be a cold day in hell before she would take her out again.

Some moms leave their kids to "play" in the children's area of bookstores while they go in an entirely different store. Happens all the time..

Regardless of the mom's behavior...I don't let my kids play alone in the other part of the store...I have had one of my kids step into another aisle when I was looking at something on the shelf....and then yelled at my kid for doing so! It can happen to the best of us which is why this is a teaching lesson for even the most diligent moms.

Have to agree that mom dropped the ball a little here.

You know what else parents should take away from this story?

Don't leave your 7 yr old unattended in a big store while you are completely out of earshot and out of sight.

All Walmarts are laid out identically (look it up) and if this mom was "buying fruit" as the GMA story says, then she was NOWHERE NEAR the toy aisle where this happened. Toys are against the back wall, fruit is against the front wall and near the entrance. In other words, far, far away from toys, not "a couple aisles over" as the story cheerily suggests.

If it were any store other than Walmart or maybe a Super Target, mom would've been in an entirely different building. That's how far away she was.

Girl was smart; mom was stupid and damn lucky.

What age do you think is apporpriate to show it? I always tell my 6 year old to scream as loud as he can and kick if anyone tries to grab him. We also tell him not to go with anyone even if they tell them Mom or dad told them he is to, etc. We have a code word.

Ugh, he was recently out of jail for charges of manslaughter.

I'm impressed that they were able to catch the bastard within an hour.

Yep. Truthfully--I have carried my kicking and screaming child our of Target before...

Ugh. Perp was out on parole for manslaughter too. DH thinks I am insane about the way I track our small kids. I don't let them out of my sight for a second in places like target, etc. This is my biggest fear. That video is so disturbing.

That turns my stomach. Must remember to have that talk with my daughters about what to do in that situation.

I remember when I was little we were taught to yell "this is not my father/mother" instead of just screaming and kicking. Otherwise people might think you were just a kid having a tantrum.
