I'll try. I have an iPhone now. I've never had a Droid, but I did talk to many Droid users before choosing the iPhone. I also was a long time Blackberry user up until about a year ago, so I was using that recent generation Blackberry as a smartphone and not just an email device.

The wonderful thing about the iPhone is that it just simply does what you want it to do, and does it well, without complication. When you see or read materials about Steve Jobs' design aesthetic of simplicity and efficiency, the iPhone really hits that target. It's also extremely intuitive, so you don't need to teach yourself much about how it operates. You just feel like you know it already. When you want to do something (say make it brighter), that setting's just where you'd expect it to be. If you've ever tried an Apple product that competes with some other manufacturer, you might know what I mean. IPod vs. other MP3 players, or Mac vs. DOS.

The Blackberry was just deficient in many ways. If could not do many things at all, and even when it could do things, the interface was clunky. Also, it was much less stable than the iPhone, so more crashes and resets. I've heard from Droid people that although the Droids are closer to iPhone in terms of functionality and user friendliness, they still are not on par. Many of those people fervently believe the Droids are better, in that they can go to further extremes than the iPhone in terms of various specs. But even most of them agree that the iPhone is better for the casual user (which I interpret to mean "most people").

A good comparison for people who owned cars during the 1990s is the Honda Accord versus a BMW. The BMW might be a better car on paper. But it's also a huge hassle to keep running at top performance. The Honda is not as flashy, but it always starts, always runs, and gets you there on time.

OP here, i'm not due for an upgrade until Dec 2012. i was thinking i would just sing another contract, but i guess that's out...

...is there any reason why i couldn't just add a line to my family plan for said smartphone? i need it for work, that's the only reason why i'm shopping for a smartphone even though i'm not eligible for an upgrade. of course i'd rather just have one (smart)phone rather than 2 devices, but there's no way i'm paying full retail. is that a dumb idea, or would that be an easy way to solve this problem?

I am 10:33 and was in the same boat. I paid the extra fee because my phone was messing up and I needed a new one regardless. If you're close, just go ahead and pay the extra pre-upgrade fee. But after I got mine, my husband wanted one and we had JUST upgraded his phone and we'd have had to pay full retail for his, so I told him he had to wait until he hit the early upgrade fee period as well.

I have verizon and am not eligible for an upgrade for another year or so. If I want an iphone I have to pay full retail price. The $99 and $199 are deals for signing a new 2yr contract.

If you are not eligible for an upgrade verizon makes you pay full retail price. iphone would be 600+ right?

Tried 2 different Droids, returned both. Love my iPhone.
