I don't get why applying for something the school chooses to offer is automatically assumed to be a person feeling entitled. Most of the FA posters on this site seem to be throwing their hat in the ring and hoping for the best, not ranting about how their kid deserves something.

Also, if you resent the idea of part of 30K+ tuition going towards financial aid, why pay it? The schools are very upfront about financial aid being part of the deal. You have a right not to purchase a product you resent. You could also make use of that good public education (which in the case of most people paying full freight actually IS good).


Totally agree. Clearly people paying full freight (myself included) feel that it's worth the price. If I didn't I wouldn't pay. I don't get torqued off if other people have to pay less; it's not like it changes the education my daughter is getting.

No, you have it reversed. After funding the school for your child and mine, you then choose to spend another 30k+ for your kid.

That is, I assume you are talking about taxes for public schools. If you are talking about financial aid donations, you're just an ass.

If a Mercedes dealer wanted to do this it would be their right as a private business.

I do understand the resentment others feel because so many families, like you, think FA is a right. But, why stop at thinking your child deserves the same education that others receive? Why not go to a Mercedes dealer and ask for a discount because other DCs are “afforded” one. Why not go to a realtor and ask for a discount on a house because other DCs are “afforded” a large house? Good public education is a right. Private education is not a right. The reason why we are "afforded" the education is because we can afford it.

Remember, on DCUM anyone earning money of any kind (as opposed to inheriting, which is just gauche) is entitled to financial aid, assuming they immediately spend every dime they earn on massive mortgages, massive student loans, massive cc debt and the general must-haves of life (one nanny per kid, housekeeper, gardener, driver, drug dealer - just the basics).

There seems to be a large amount of anger and resentment over families receiving financial aid. Is it that when you have a certain amount of financial wealth or class you feel that only others in the same boat deserve the same education that you and your DC were afforded?
