We also have a standoffish AART and teachers who won't speak about the process. My dd got in 2 years ago with scores in the 130s and a GBRS that was a mystery. I am hoping the same will work out for my son whose scores are 10-15 pts higher.

OP here-To the 9:00 poster-which school was this if I may ask? A center school?

It seems the AAP resource teachers are getting too much power if kids with lower GRBS scores can do in and do well.

All the AAP would say is to go ahead and apply and see what happens.

I asked. AART "forgot" to bring the GBRS's. No matter, DC was in pool anyway and got in w/out appeal.

[list]It really depends on what the AAP resource teacher thinks of your child's abilities. Many parents at our school say the resource teacher has told them there child needs to be at the center. I have been told by the resource teacher herself and by several other parents the she (the AAP resource teacher) has written and/or rewritten applications to get children "she deemed worthy" into the AAP center. If she doesn't think your child is a fit she gives you no information - I experienced this myself. Your bright child will do fine in spite of it all. Do worry.

What's the point in having a pool if such a high percentage get accepted by self referral? Many parents don't even know about the self referral process/option. I really feel the whole process is a lot less objective and a lot more self selective than it appears to be. It seems like if you really want your child in a level IV class all you have to do is get a WISC done and hope they get a half decent score. I have yet to hear of anyone who doesn't seem to do well on the WISC!

Historically 2/3 of in-pool kids are found center-eligible and 40% of referred kids are found center-eligible.

I did ask to see DC's GBRS last year. It was already the beginning of April when I asked. I was surprised by the number, it was an 8. DC was accepted in 1st round because high test scores. DC is now outpacing most of class at AAP. I laugh at the GBRS now because it just proved to me how much they didn't understand DC's ability.

Our school's AART has been fabulous. I haven't spoken to DC's teacher as she is busy enough already, so I have only reached out to the AART.

I do plan on arranging to see the file. I didn't know that was an option with my dd 2 years ago and I've always been curious. If the cogat scores are abnormally high, the committee will probably look at whether the NNAT was high also.
