Maybe you could speak with parents of children in your neighborhood who go to the center school and find out what their experience is. In addition, if the center school has any events that are open to the community,such as an international night or a spring carnival, you could maybe attend and get a sense of the school's atmosphere.
I'm not sure the orientation is absolutely necessary, especially if you have done your own research in advance.

My DC got in on appeal so we missed the orientation. We called the school and they were very kind. They set up a meeting with the principal in the summer and she showed DC around. If you get in on appeal, call the school and discuss it with them. Our center school (Haycock) was very helpful.

148 should on the Wisc should be in regardless of gbrs. Gbrs, in my opinion, is used to offset issues with group level testing.

Yes, a 148 should definitley be submitted. I can't imagine it being denied unless the GBRS was abnormally low.

If you already have good WISC scores, don't save them, just send them in now & make your best case -- your child will get in if they're good & GBRS are solid. Don't "plan" for the appeal -- if the scores are good, you can avoid the need for appeal. Much better to get in on first round and attend the orientation than dealing with stress of appeal. If you don't get in on first round with the WISC scores, they're probably not good enough to get your child in on appeal either. You can do other testing if you have the means & your child is denied on first round.

Correction: acceptance letters on appeal came out at the end of June, and school was already out by the time I wanted a tour of center, so it was a no go. Sorry for any confusion!

That orientation in August is not relevant if you're trying to choose between center and Local Level IV at the base school. That happened to us. Accepted on appeal in May, had to elect school choice a few weeks later, and center school had no options for checking out the program (other than electing center in June and going to the August open house). We ended up electing to stay at the base school because that's what most of the AAP students do, and we had no way of checking out the center before we had to make our choice.

No, but students who get in on appeal may attend the general new student open house in September.

I read on another thread that AAP Center orientations are in early May. Does anyone know if there are orientations available for students who are found Center-eligible on appeal?
