I'm wondering if distribution varies by school ... Would a 50/50 P/I report at one school be a 95/5 P/I somewhere else?

I'm the PP you quoted. I agree that he doesn't need to be worried. But I think he should know that he needs to pay attention in the group setting, etc.

My son got an I in Evaluates self as a learner. We thought that was amusing.

My October b-day boy got 3 Is and the rest Ps. My older daughter had a more like 50/50 mix in her K year. I think if he had all Ps I'd wonder if he was wasting his time (well not really but Is mean you're learning as you should be). FYI-- our report card was preceded by an email from the teacher saying there will be no comments unless you get an N in something.

My DS got a handful of "I"s for some of the social skills and for PE. I'd say he got about 2/3 "P"s and the rest "I"s. No "N"s.

We didn't have a cover letter.

Got ours today too. DD received 'P's' for everything except P.E. where she got an 'I.'

My son received lots of Is and more than a few Ns, mostly for the "sitting still" and "completing tasks independently without teacher motivation" categories. I focused more on the write-up, which noted he's reading above grade level, knows all his site words and most of the 1st grade ones, and is grasping all of his math concepts. He is, after all, 5.

No cover letter in our case.
DC's score breakdown was exactly as I
expected - "P"s for knowledge categories, "I"s for the rest, such as attention and social skills... ah well. Considering his inattentive type ADHD, I'm just happy his attention score wasn't "N"!

"I" means "in progress", I believe. Hopefully by June she'll have moved to "P" (proficient). You can always check with your teacher in another 1-2 months for sort of 3rd quarter feedback. You won't get another report card until June.

Yes, normal. I'm sure the actual percentage of P's, I's, and N's varies by teacher or school, but I think that the cover letter is a tip-off that I's are nothing to stress about in this case--this teacher (or school) uses them to say that the child is "normal" in that category.

I know there's another thread about grades & grade inflation, but it got snarky so I wanted to start fresh.

We just got our first report card (DD is in K). It came with a cover letter that said that we should expect I's (In progress or something like that - scale is P, I, N). So, if DD's report card is at least half I's, that should be normal & expected? Just wondering what other people think.
