We have love Highland View for our DS who is an above grade level learner. The K-2 classes are small, like 15-18 per class. So, there is more attention from the teachers. There are reading, math and spelling groups within the classroom, and some advanced readers from other classes come to DS's class for reading group There is combined 4/5 class this year. We are not familiar with the details of it, but I heard it was a way to keep class size down an also provide some challenge opportunity for the 4th graders in the class. I have neighbors who sent one child to the HGC at another school, but decided to not even apply for their younger child because they felt he was happy and challenged enough at Highland View.

I think that any concerns about challenge at the school are general issues with 2.0.

Bumping this thread. I know Highland View is known for doing a great job with a diverse student body, particularly its English language learners, but I'm wondering if someone could offer their perspective on how more advanced students fare in the school. Thanks!

The spring carnival is in May sometime. News about it will be posted on the PTA listserv. You may want to attend the February 7 PTA meeting because the principal will be doing a presentation on the new curriculum that is being introduced in the lower grades. I think it is in use in K-1 this year.

OP here - thanks so much for the info. This makes me really excited about the school! Do you know when the spring carnival will be held? We'd love to come. I did join the PTA Yahoo Group and am looking forward to learning more that way.

Highland view is a wonderful with a great principal. There is lots of parental involvement. The school is like the little Engine That Could - one of the smallest schools in the county with one of the most diverse student populations. There is a broad range of ability and need, but it all works together. You should attend the Spring Carnival, it will give you a nice peek at the community. also, you would probably be welcome at the monthly PTA meetings the first Tuesday of every month at 7:15.

My daughter will be starting kindergarten at Highland View Elementary in the Fall. Does anyone have kids there? Do you have any thoughts, experiences, suggestions, tips, etc. that you can share for a family new to the school? We have heard great things about the school and are looking forward to our daughter attending.
