Top Ivy law school -- sure, the name opens doors (at least in the years soon after graduation), but alum network is nowhere near as useful as Seven Sisters. There just isn't the same eagerness to help another alumna/us.

Agree, It seems in general people are less willing to help or apprehensive about helping someone else. Your name is always attached to that other person. Such a shame years ago, people were more willing to help one another, alumnai, family, friends, if you were from the same town..

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear -- my point wasn't that times have changed, but that my experience has been different with respect to alums from my college, who are very willing to help, in comparison to alums from my law school, who are not so generous.

Also seven sisters here, as well as a professional program. A couple of competitive internships awarded because I went to the same school as someone picking the interns, an informational interview for a job, and a school name helped open the door with the hiring manager for my current position.

An alumnae of my college referred me to my first internship, and after I graduated that internship gave me my first job.

I've hired three interns, and two entry level folks from my college. One of the hires was easily the best hire I've ever made.

Did lots of info interviews with alums of my MBA school. No question that the name brand of the school (Ivy, top 5 MBA program) has served me very well. I have also gotten some client referrals (and vice versa) from a couple of alums.

I am on a local listserv for my college and there are various job postings circulated pretty frequently by alums. Most aimed at recent grads of course.

Nothing from my Big 3 HS.

Informational interview, acceptance school, internship, job interview, job? Curious, specifically what help did they give?
