As long as they treated my knives like the precious delicate darlings they are (do not cut directly on the countertop! do not put them in the dishwasher!) and didn't make a giant mess for me to clean up, I'd be cool with it.

But seriously, I'm really touchy about my knives.

Your MIL is your family member, and it's your husband's kitchen, too. That said, she should share the food with you and the kids, and ask first to be sure you were not about to cook/need the kitchen.

My SILs came to visit awhile back and decided to tackle a big cooking project. Initially, I fully intended to participate, but the kitchen couldn't really accommodate all of us and I found myself getting silently annoyed at a lot of things they were doing.... so I nominated myself Event Photographer and took a big step back.

Never really had anyone else take over my kitchen, but based on that experience.... don't think I'd be OK with it.

I would guess your MIL , DH, DC's consider the MIL a family member. Part of being a married or partnered adult or parent is realizing the others [including DC's] have independent relationships with others in the extended family. Wait until you have teens or young adults using the kitchen.

Wouldn't be able to stand it, but my MIL doesn't cook, so the thing that it's all about is a tussle over cleaning up.

My dh does all the cooking and he would never want his mother in the kitchen, let alone mine. There's a real power struggle over kitchens between those two.

Well last year I had a baby two weeks before Christmas and stepmother IL busts in like a tornado taking over. At the moment I was fine with it until Christmas Eve when I sat in the kitchen, half hr before guests arrived and she started a fire inside my oven. She then proceeded to throw a whole box of baking powder all over the room trying to pug it out. After that incident I became possessive....

I'd be happy if someone was cooking. Then I'd wait for it to be done and enjoy in the feast with the family! Glass half full view.

Really? It's your kitchen and DH's wishes aren't satisfactory approval? Of all the things to dislike a MIL for, cooking seems to be about the pettiest.

I have to say, this is the OP, that I would like to add the women in my family have all agreed that this would drive them insane. I am wondering if other women feel the same or are we all just territorial and possessive about our kitchens?
