Find a private K here in FFX County to place him in for the rest of this year. Then he can try and test into first grade for next year. Otherwise, he can do K again in the public system. I wouldn't put him back in Pre-K at this point.

I think your best bet is to call up the Ffx Co. school where your kid would go. Honestly, I think it is very unlikely that the school's principal will accept your child, currently in private K, with a Dec. birthday into public K this year. First, he isn't even close to the cutoff and will be a good year plus younger than many many of the kids in his class. I'm amazed by how many of my son's classmates turned six between Oct. and Dec. Like a good third with another 25% turning in Jan/Feb.

I know it seems like a step back, but I'd try to find a good pre-K, full time program for your son instead.

They don't always accept kindergarten graduates from private schools anyway. In my son's kindergarten class, at least 1/3 are with birthdays from July to December, so he'd fit in well. They have more advanced work at least several times a week for advanced learners so it isn't too bad.

DC would start K September 2012. The cut off is September 30th. They are very strict about this.

Your child could go into an accredited private K and test into public K for first grade as well in 2012. Most people would rather their child start on time when they have a late birthday-kids are more mature, and may have a little edge on others. It all depends on your child.

In Fairfax county a child needs to turn 5 by September 30th the year they enter Kindergarten. If you son will turn 5 this December, he would start Kindergarten in 2013. There are many PreK and Junior K programs at various preschools that cater to children with birthdays that miss the cutoff. One of those would probably be the best bet for your son.
