It's less expensive because it's in Fairfax and the other places are closer to Tysons/DC and Metro. People pay for shorter commutes because traffic in this area is so bad.

True. That's why living way out in Greenbriar W would be even less expensive.

Yes, it is fairfax, but closer then most parts of fairfax. My husband works in rosslyn and it takes him 20 minutes door to door using dunn loring metro. I can make it to tysons mall in 15 minutes using backroads. Parts of fairfax just outside the beltway and close to the Orange line arent that bad. Zip code 22031.

A Potomac River crossing commute is easier from the Haycock area than from Greenbriar W.

you definitely need to be as close to both your jobs as you can. we live in Greenbriar, but we commute to Lorton and Ashburn. We would have made a completely different choice if we commuted to downtown and tyson's.

Life is too short to spend over an hour commuting each way in traffic every day.
We had a large SFH in South Riding and it was taking my husband nearly 2 hours to get home each day when he would leave work in Arlington at 4. We moved to a townhouse in Falls Church and now he's home in 15 minutes. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

I'd look for schools in either the McLean or Yorktown HS areas.

I agree. Easy commute to both locations and some of the best schools in FCPS.

I would strongly agree with the PP (16:11). As an alternative, you might want to look in the area of North Arlington - 22207 - that feeds into the Jamestown/Taylor - Williamsburg - Yorktown triangle. Jamestown/Taylor (elementary schools) are zoned also for Arlington Science and Key (Spanish) Immersion - all comparable with the Haycock triangle in FFX

If money is no object, Vienna or McLean, maybe Falls Church City would be your best bets.

If your budget is around $500,000 or $600,000, I'd try to buy into the Woodson or maybe Lake Braddock or West Springfield pyramids. IMO, Oakton is too far out for a daily DC commute.

My advice is to look at the high schools and then when you have narrowed it down to one or two high schools look at the elementary schools.

That's what we did, and we just bought in the Woodson pyramid.

Starting to think about moving, buying a new house, would like to buy somewhere that I will be districted into a great public school. Kids are not school-age yet, so I don't know whether they will need smaller classrooms, extra assistance, gifted programs, etc., which makes picking a school more difficult. I'm overwhelmed at the volume of schools, particularly in Fairfax County. I would love for someone to just tell me the best place to go to more or less assure that elementary, middle, and high schools will be top notch for the long-haul. Vienna? McLean? Oakton? Falls Church? Arlington? I'm commuting into DC, but my husband works in Tyson's, so we have a little flexibility as far as where we move.

If anyone can make any recommendations or narrow my search, I'd be grateful.
