Compass Academy in Halethorpe Maryland also is an excellent school for ADHD - It is where my ADHD son is currently attending school. Compass is a new school this school year and serves children from 1-12th grade.

OP here. Actually, 15:16's post has been the most helpful to date. How big are the classes? Where will these kids go to middle school once the new middle school is online?

Oh, your neighbor is ADHD? I know her. Cute little girl, right? Interesting name, though. I "have" ADHD but thank goodness people don't think of that before thinking of me as a person.

Our neighbor across the street is ADHD and went to Somerset for K through 2nd grade. She got wonderful services. Her mother switched her to private school in 3rd grade that specializes in ADHD children, but she said that she will move her back to Somerset next year for 4th grade because she felt that the Somerset services were actually better (and free!)

I think Somerset is very small class sizes, like 6 per teacher. But I think it's also for the "GT/LD" program. I don't know what it takes to qualify the child as GT.

What is the class size at Somerset? Our doctor said that small class size was the most important factor to look for in a school for our ADHD child. There are less distractions in a smaller classroom, the teacher is better able to keep the kids focused when there are fewer of them, kids get more one-on-one time and the teacher is more likely to notice quickly if your child starts falling behind. After small class size, the next thing our doctor advised us to look for is a lot of breaks/transitions between classes. An ideal schedule would allow for a couple of small breaks or recesses throughout the day and lots of movement between classrooms (language arts in the homeroom, science in the science lab, art in an art room, etc.). A schedule that is less than ideal would be one where the kids are in their homeroom all morning until lunch/recess, then go back to their homeroom for the duration of the day with the exception of only one or two classes occurring outside of the homeroom.

How is Somerset elementary for a child with ADHD? I am sure we would qualify for a 504 but not sure if we could get an IEP. Child is academically successful but behaviorally / socially challenged.
