We love The Land of Little Horses-it's maybe 10 minutes out of Gettysburg. Is's great for 1/2a day!!

When we go to Gettysburg, we usually go to the Antietam battlefield on the way. It's very compact and can be toured in relatively little time, but it is fascinating.

sorry - PP here - I just looked up Boyd's Bear Country and apparently it is now closed.

Boyd's Bear Country is a nice place to browse if you feel like going into a store. As of a few years ago, they had a nice food court and a Build a Bear type station on one of the floors.

You can even go up to Hanover to the UTZ factory and the kids can take the tour and see how potato chips and pretzels are made

I've always wanted to do a ghost tour.....not sure if they are kid-friendly or not, but I'd try. 8)

Due west of Gettysburg is Michaux State Forest. The Appalachian Trail runs right through it, there's a hostel and store where through-hikers like to hang out, and there's also a lake you can swim in (though that's probably not very inviting right now!).

Don't skip Little Round Top and read 'Killer Angels' before you go.
Liberty Mountain has a very nice daycare if you want to get in a morning or afternoon of skiing, it is very close to town. But make reservations as soon as you know what day you will go, people who 'walk up' same day to the childcare desk can be out of luck. My 2 year old had a great time there.
We liked the tavern at Dobbins for lunch. We also had dinner at the Vietnamese place in town but it wasn't as good as places in the city. The dining room at the Best Western is actually pretty good and probably kid friendly.
There are a lot of funny shops with hats and Civil War stuff you cannot find anywhere else. There is probably a neat toy shop in town somewhere.
I have wanted to visit Cunningham Falls but I've never been.
The Country Inn and Suites has an indoor pool. The Battlefield B&B is on a farm with animals and nice common areas & breakfast. The BW has jacuzzi fireplace suites that are not much more than the regular rooms.

We hook up the bike trailer and get a good tour guide that does bike tours of the battlefields

I drive through there to go to my parents' house. We sometimes stop in Cunningham State Park in Thurmont. They have trails, waterfalls, etc plus a good playground down in the Manor area. That's maybe 20 miles south of Gettysburg so maybe do that on the way there or back.
