I recently got glasses similar to these, except a little more square in shape, and I have gotten LOTS of compliments on them from my most fashion-conscious friends and co-workers. One friend, who is very up on trends, told me they were very "in" and she was going to get some herself.

For me, since I'm not cool enough to actually watch Portlandia, it just refers to the popularity of bird motifs. (I like them a lot, myself, actually.)

I do get the sense, from the little bit of trendiness that drifts down to me in my dotage, that it was a phrase that got a lot of play on the internet over the last year or so. It seems that the characters on the show make fun of this aspect of the hipster aesthetic all the time. They put stylized bird images on stuff to make it trendier.

what does "put a bird on it" mean?

I like them both, and they look the same to me. They are 'in' in that they have dark plastic frames and a rounded shape.

That's actually the point of the trend. I see them called "hipster glasses" most often. But, PP, I don't think such oversized frames work for over-35s. We can't really participate in the more aggressively ironic hipster fashion trends. It's enough to wind a scarf around your neck and "put a bird on it", but we can't gracefully go much farther.

It seems to me like the small, retangular frames are still popular. But, instead of very thin wire frames or wireless frames, people are getting more bold with their frames. Some go for thicker plastic frames or they have frames thicker sides or embelishments on the sides.
