The other thing to look for is to see if the school is at capacity or not. If the school that the child wants to transfer into is closed to transfers, then that child has to look elsewhere. If thy know where they are going to live and have a place purchased/lease signed, then they can apply to the school of their choice ahead of when they actually arrive here. Again, if the school is full they will have to look elsewhere, and it might be a much longer drive to get to the next IB school depending on where they live.

Thanks so much for the info -- especially the link. This request was for a good friend of mine who wouldn't be in the area until the summer with her kids, so I'm guessing the April deadline won't apply.

And *still* no answer or return phone call from the program office. grrrrrrrrrr.

You should look at this site as well:

Not sure when you're moving to the area, but there are deadlines in April for current students who want to transfer to a different high school.

Above is true, but you have to provide transportation.

You do not have to live in the boundaries of the IB school to attend. As far as I understand you can choose to attend an IB school if your base school does not offer the program.

Say for example you live in the boundary for McLean HS but want your child to attend Marshall for the IB -- can you petition for your child to attend Marshall so that s/he can go for the IB, since it isn't offered at your base school? Or would the family have to live in the boundary for the IB school?

Please no replies debating the pros/cons of IB versus AP, in this particular instance, the child would be coming for senior year only from an overseas/international school environment where continuing with the program in which s/he is already invested is very important.

Yes, there is a process through which you can apply to attend the closest IB school.
