I sure don't want to weigh myself down with gold, what with those fleet-footed black people running about.

Plus, gold has the added benefit of taking monetary policy out of the hands of professionals, and putting it in the hands of various arbitrary factors (e.g. natural reserves, the gold mining industry, etc, etc...)

And by "added benefit" of course I mean utter ridiculousness.

I think he opposes giving any government, especially an international one, the power to print paper money. Gold is god-given, as opposed to paper given artificial value by government fiat. This is not my position, just my understanding of Paul's.
