In time hopefully text boox will be a thing of the past, and kids will carry only a tablet or an ultra thin laptop. Texts can be downloaded. Homework can be emailed and with wifi a printer can be in every room just in case something needs to be printed.

There really is no reason for kids to lug textbooks around anymore.

At the HS in which I teach no one carries laptops unless they have an assignment which requires it. Also, all the kids already carry HUGE backpacks and another 7-8 lbs would break them. I don't know of anything prohibiting it, but I don't know that it would be allowed out-right without some sort of discussion/ agreement w/ admin and teachers.

I can tell you from personal experience that laptops are allowed if the parent absolves the school from responsibility as the result of theft. I can also tell you that the very few kids who do carry laptops are mocked as nerds and they tend to be Asian or Indian.

I assume the PP meant Macbook and not IMac. That would be a real pain the back to carry around a desktop all day!

My son takes his imac AND his ipad to school every day. Oh- and his iphone 4s too. It's never been an issue.

I don't know if it is prohibited either, although I assume if you have accommodations they will permit it. I think the reality is the kids don't want to carry them around all day and there would be a loss/theft risk since they rarely use lockers. Plus the teachers at our school do a good job using the smart boards and posting notes to Edline.

I'm an MCPS high school teacher. I don't know of any rule prohibiting this, although teachers may be taken aback by it. I have rarely seen students using a laptop for note taking in all my years teaching in MCPS (well over a decade). In fact, the only ones I remember in my classes used a laptop due to a disability, and that was part of their IEP.

We're moving to the area and my teens currently must use laptops for all of their classes in MS and HS. Does anyone know if the high schools in Montgomery Cty allow kids to use/take notes on their personal laptops during school?
