if you're worried about soy, try almond milk - he might like one of the flavors available, and i think the calories are similar to 2% dairy milk.

Coconut. (Or so says my kid. I've never tried it.)

If yogurt seems to be okay, try kefir.

If it's lactose intolerance, he may still be able to eat yogurt because it's slightly fermented.

I love unsweetened almond milk, but I think it's a very individual thing. I'd try several to see what you prefer.

Like some others, I'm wary about soy milk.

We've used all of the following:

hemp milk, rice milk, almond milk. Stay away from soy.

5 year old DS just became lactose intolerant last summer, so we've been through this. DS likes rice milk to replace milk on cereal, in smoothies, etc. We tried almond and others, but he likes rice best. We use the sweetened kind. I like unsweetened coconut milk to cook with, as it behaves more like whole milk in recipes. Makes a fabulous mac and cheese (use a no lactose cheese, of course). For a treat, try making hot cocoa with sweetened coconut milk. Really yummy.

I'm lactose intolerant and prefer the taste/consistency of unsweetened soy milk, particularly for cereal. Right now I'm breastfeeding and DC has issues with soy, so I've switched to Tempt brand unsweetened hemp milk, which is also pretty good and has omega 3s. I find rice milk too watery and only like almond milk if it's sweetened.

Trader Joe's coconut milk is very good.

DS drinks lactose-free and it actually tastes like milk... still gets his calcium.

We use unsweetened almond milk for our DD, mainly when she is congested (most of the winter) as it helps cut down on the mucous. She loves it and it is fortified, so has a good vitamin & calcium content.

Can your DS tolerate yogurt? We don't worry as much about calcium intake since our DD loves yogurt and gets a lot of calcium that way.

DS is 5 and doesn't seem to be tolerating milk, any suggestions?
Sweetened/unsweetened?
Almond?
I don't really like the idea of soy milk for him but. Want him to get his calcium
