And, now Thomas has resigned. The Board of Elections has five days to declare the seat vacant and set the date for a special election which will probably be in May (I think). Potential candidates are coming out of the woodwork, but Vincent Orange -- who previously held that seat -- apparently wants to be kingmaker and is planning a meeting to try to narrow the candidate field.

Council Member Harry Thomas, Jr. was charged today with one count of Theft Concerning Programs Receiving Federal Funds and one count of Filing a False Tax Return.

He is being asked to forfeit his 2008 Victory Motorcycle and 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe.

It is alleged that Thomas "embezzled, stole, obtained by fraud" $353,500 in DC government funds.
