My ancestors were killed in the Holocaust. I wouldn't eat German food for anything...the smell makes me gag.

Actually I didn't like german or austrian food until I actually had it in Germany and Austria. Night and day compared to here.

We went to the Old Stein Inn which is near Annapolis. It was very good, and relatively authentic.

I'm German and I have yet to find a German restaurant in MD, DC or VA that I liked or that had authentic food. You could always come to my house and I'll make you the best Schnitzel and Kaesespaetzle ever!!!

I like Leopold too, including its atmosphere, although it's mostly for cakes and desserts (also pretty pricy).

Old Europe gets better after your second beer.

We like Kafe Leopold in Georgetown ...but not strictly German/Austrian. Lovely place. Old Europe in Glover Park used to be good but I haven't been in ages.

If you're willing to drive to Hagerstown, there's a great restaurant there called Schmankerl Stube. My dad is German and we hiked out there for his 80th birthday and he was in heaven.

I've been to several in DC (Old Europe, Cafe Mozart, Cafe Berlin, Biergartenhaus) and have always left disappointed.
