OP, just go with SSSA or Burgundy Farm, depending on your proclivities. Both offer great things that are completely different from each other.

Something like, say, Beauvoir is so, so, so not worth THAT commute over a SSSA, for a 7 year old.

We live in Alexandria and our DD goes to Beauvoir. I can say without hesitation that her experience at Beauvoir has been well worth the commute. It's about 30-35 minutes in the morning and about 20-25 in the afternoon (Rock Creek runs the right direction in the afternoon). I don't know the exact number, but I know of at least 6 families in Old Town alone with kids at Beauvoir, and additional families with kids at STA and NCS, so it's not an uncommon commute. There are also a number of carpools, and the kids seem to become friends with their Alexandria classmates. One very nice Alexandria family hosted a get together for all Old Town (maybe all Alexandria, I don't know) families. It's a nice, welcoming group.

12 miles from home (but 30-45m by car) and then 6m (30m) to my work. Kids are in before/after care.

Do you keep your kids in extended care?

School ends at 3ish we pick them up at 4ish. Kids can stay after school at no cost. There are buses also that we do not use.

Arlington to NW DC, 25 minutes in the morning, 35 minutes coming home. 15 minutes both ways on the weekends and not during rush hour. (less traffic, rock creek is 2 ways, etc.)

Arlington to Bethesda for one child (worth the 25 minute commute, and yes we do extended day). Other child in public school and completely happy with that placement. Different kids, different needs.

20-25 mins. It's a hassle. We are in the car at 7:35am for 8 am arrival, and if I have to swing back to the house I arrive back after 8:30 - so a full hour r/t.

Ours is 12 minutes away. My office is between my house and the school.

Many have bus options (we don't take advantage of ours, but those who do say it's great) and before and aftercare. Sometimes that can help. Our school is 20 min away.

It's a great community and we couldn't be more pleased with the education our child is getting. There are also several excellent K-8 schools in Alexandria. I have a friend that makes the drive from Alexandria to a NW DC school every day, and it is brutal.

Check out the schools yourself. Please take the "Big 3" hype you read on this board with a major grain of salt.

I may be suffering from buyer's remorse. We picked convenience (DH and I both will have 15 minute commutes) over good public schooling. Now it appears that the good private schools are also inconvenient.

All the privates we are considering are within a 15 minute drive. I'd be very hesitant to commute from Alexandria to DC, Bethesda or Rockville. You should look at SSSA.

We just bought a house in Alexandria and plan to send our children to private school. Wondering what the normal commute time to school is for others.

The best private schools seem to be in Bethesda/Rockville, McLean and DC.
