I think you're guilty of stereotyping as well.

She said in her experience.

"In her experience" or not, she's made a wide generalization in saying "most elderly white people." Would you feel the same if I said, "In my experience, most male Muslims are terrorists?!"

I read it as that most of the elderly white people she knows (perhaps her relatives) hold prejudiced views about other races. If most of the male Muslims you've met were terrorists, it wouldn't mean that most male Muslims are terrorists, but it would mean most male Muslims that you've interacted with are terrorists.

And then you are done? I guess you think they are too old or senile to learn something from you?

This has unfortunately been my experience, but what is even worse, in some ways, is my mom who thinks she is "down with the black people" and thinks she is racially aware because she has a black housekeeper. SMH

Any one who uses the term "all" or "most" in referencing a group of people are showing ignorance.

My 70 year old mother is absolutely not but my 74 year old father (from the deep south) absolutely is. And I can't believe one of the PP's has grandparents the same age as my parents!

Move or wait until they are gone.

No, my 70 year old grandfather (white) is married to my 75 year grandmother (AA). So, I'm going to assume he's not.

Sigh. White woman here. My grandparents have been gone for a while now, and I've been missing the presence of that generation in my life. We've got a lot of 75+ y.o. "original owners" in my 1960s suburban NoVA neighborhood. I've really enjoyed getting to know quite a few of them, but inevitably, at some point in our friendship/acquaintanceship, they'll say something really racist. And then I'm done.

I was raised in '80s era P.G. County, which resembled the racial mix of Sesame Street, so I know I'm somewhat sheltered from this stuff, but seriously, are all elderly white people racist? FWIW, my elderly neighbors seem to hail from all over -- NY, MA, SC, etc. Maybe I need to move to Takoma Park.
