You could contact the US Embassy and see if there were any American Ob/Gyns in the area. You could seek out a Jewish community and then ask about private doctors and mohels.

YOU PEOPLE ARE SO MEAN. There is no reason to be disrespectful and rude to someone just because they have their own opinions and wishes about circumcision. What is it about this website that makes people think they can be so snarky and rude? I am incredibly offended just reading this. How about giving the original poster a little common-sense advice and letting her make up her own mind instead of brow-beating?

I find it really amazing you want to expose your child to a packed airplane full of germs very early in their life to cut off a functioning part of their body just b/c you did it to your older child.

OP, until you get your child's paperwork to allow him to travel internationally it's going to take a loonnng time. I traveled as soon as DD got the first passport and visa ( to come and go back ) we didn't even wait for the second passport and it took 10 weeks!!!

They used both local and topical anesthesia for my son's circumcision. Oppose the procedure on whatever grounds you choose, but choose real reasons.

OP, I would find a private doctor, if I could. I don't know how young he'll be, or how far away you're coming from, but don't drag an itty itty baby into a germy airport and plane.

I would go this route too, looking to see if there are folks who do circs for religious reasons and if they would do them for someone not of their faith. I'm not sure how Muslims handle circumcision, but I know that here some mohels will do non-religious circs and others won't.

Otherwise, I think you'd probably need to have the circ within the first month or so (might be two months) to avoid needing general anesthesia. A pediatric surgeon, pediatric urologist or one of the many mohels who is also a physician would do it. And you'd want to try to set up the appt ASAP, perhaps even before the baby is born.

We are currently living outside the US, in a country that has universal healthcare and does not provide circumcisions unless there is a medical emergency. Without question, we want our baby circumcised if it's a boy (older brother and dad both circumcised, etc.). We could possibly find a private doc here to do it but it sounds a little sketchy to me. Since it is so uncommon, it doesn't sound like doctors are very experienced or willing. So we are considering flying back with a newborn and two preschoolers for the circ--not the most appealing idea ever but will do if need be.

Has anyone had to do this? How soon could we fly with the newborn to avoid anesthesia? Are there docs in DC I could call to just do the circ?
