Certain posters on this site repeatedly hammer those receiving welfare. According to them, they are lazy and a drain on productive society and not deserving of our tax dollars. This woman's story shows there is another side. It is quite clear that this woman was not looking at food stamps out of laziness. She was desperate. We don't know all of the facts, and so I don't want to point fingers at Texas for causing this situation. She may have had mental illness / depression. We don't know why she never got an interview. And we don't know whether she would have even qualified in the end.
The point is that people have needs and sometimes they can't meet them, it is more than laziness. A decent country helps those in need. And we should not forget how high the stakes are when people's needs are not met.
I completely agree with you. It doesn't even matter if this woman may have had mental problems, and if she did, maybe they were created due to hunger and being terrified at not being able to feed her children. Nevertheless, these two children did not have mental problems but they needed food, shelter, all the things that your children need. There is a fundamental flaw in a country that gives billions in foreign aid but denies the basic necessities to its own citizens. She had to fill ou 18 pages initially to see if she qualified for food samps! This is an outrage. Something has to change or there will be another civil way between the "haves and the have nots," and the latter will win.
