Definitely SHOP around. My husband was almost that old when we got him a term policy and found that some cost twice what others did for good rated companies (this is important - they need to be around to pay out!). I work for L&F, and we actually have a great insurance branch - they were able to shop for us and were very good at picking out good companies with good coverage. Stacy (a man) Phillips was the person to talk to. I highly recommend emailing him - it's at least free to apply and see what rates they can get. stacy.phillips@longandfoster.com. His work number is 703-877-7603.

We just bought life insurance -- i'm 50 and husband over 60. mine for $500K for 15 years was around $500 per year. My husband's was close to triple that. we are both in good health.

We've never had insurance beyond what his/my employer offered, but when I lost my job it made me worry.

I didn't even consider his age until I started pricing insurance...

Were either of you ever in the military? USAA is reasonable.

OP here. Thanks much for the info and the recommendation, appreciate it. Does anyone know of a good retirement seminar that's offered to the public (and isn't pushing products)? Thanks.

Hi TIA, We are in the same position. We went to a retirement seminar through our government employer, mainly because we want to eventually retire and we did not have any idea what that looked like. We found out that we were underinsured. My husband does a lot of traveling to the Arabian Peninsula and we found he was not insurable. Totally rejected (I guess we could have shopped around and paid huge huge premiums, but that did not make financial sense in the big picture). I did get insurance for me.

After the retirement seminar, we felt it was prudent to get a financial advisor. There was no product selling at this seminar. Best thing we ever did. (We use Eric Lantz at Ameriprise). He negotiated the life insurance maze for us and gave us the big picture of our financial matters.

Hi all, my husband is over 50 and we've got a young child. He has been buying life insurance through his employer for years, but we believe a term policy would make a lot more sense now. Of course it's very expensive at this point because of his age--anybody been through this and have any helpful advice, i.e. best insurance companies, etc? Many TIA.
