I thought this was a great idea as well, especially given that each child has so many teachers. The suggested donation was fairly nominal, but I personally think that parents that can afford to should give a higher amount as the teachers work very hard and are paid very little. Moreover, it is unrealistic to believe that everyone will give.

Janney parent here. Room parents collect cash and give teacher a gift care. This year there is also a "secret snowflake" thing where each family "adopts" a staff member and gets them little gifts. It totally annoying but we participated anyway.

precisely. It might be funny when the first child farts in church, because it's unexpected and shocking. But when the other children start in, well, totally not funny at all. Exponentially less funny each subsequent time.

Yu Ying families chip in for cash gifts to the teachers. In China (Asia, really) it's traditional and acceptable to give cash, particularly new bills, so it works. I'm not sure you could pull it off anywhere else, though.

From a WASPy background, it may (definitely will) feel tacky at first, but once you get past the first class gift, a competitive instinct kicks in. Who wants to be the least generous class, right?

The room parents collect $$ for gifts, usually $10-20 from each family per teacher.

Our preferred approach is for class to buy the teacher(s) a gift (perhaps a small gift along with a gift card). Parent donations of $10 or $20 are suggested, but completely optional. Card says "from the class" with no names.

At Mann the families all pitch in and buy the teacher a new car (Volvo S60).
