You can use cream cheese sweetened with vanilla and sugar instead (basically, a cream cheese frosting).

agreed!!!

They are easy "in theory" but I found it pretty tedious work after the fifth or so. They do take practice, so bake a few and practice, practice, practice.
As cute as they are they are just too time consuming for me, especially if you are doing the very decorated ones, with little faces and such.

much better to use the cake pan-i use my own cake recipe in them, cream cheese based cakes work well and then dip into candy chocolate

1. Bake a 13x9 inch cake. Let it cool.
2. Crumble the cake into a large bowl - make the pieces as fine as you can.
3. Mix in 3/4 can of premade frosting. If you use too much, the becomes goopy and unworkable. The remainder 1/4 of the can isn't used.
4. Roll mixture into balls.
5. Refrigerate for 2 or so hours or freeze for 15 minutes.
6. Melt candy pieces (I use Wilton and I only melt one bag at a time because it's easier to work with.
I use the microwave on high and stir after each minute.
7. Dip the stick into the melted candy.
8. Stick the stick into the cake ball.

I've looked at recipes and I don't it's hard. And I don't think you need the Magic Cake Pop Pan or whatever they are hyping. It looks like you just mix cake crumbs and frosting and stick it on a lollipop stick and then just dunk it in baker's chocolate.

I keep seeing commercials for those cake pops (like a lollipop, but it's a small round ball of cake instead). They look delicious and so decorative. It seems really easy to do (pour batter, bake, pop out, and decorate). Is it too good to be true? Has anybody ordered and/or attempted to make them?
