It has happened to me. I was freaking 40 weeks pregnant and while the guy parked I left the car and went all the way to the driver's window and called him shameless with my bellybutton rubbing against his window.

He backed up to give me the spot back.

It was one of the spots for pregnant women and parents with young infants closer to the door.

You cannot gift someone a parking spot that you don't not own. That said, people are NUTS and you are better off not engaging with crazy people.

So, OP, did you key the guy's car after he went into the store?

I'd find another parking space because the "space stealer" is probably a bit crazy and doesn't mind confrontation, and I don't want to be killed over a fucking parking space. I don't even want to argue with anyone over a parking space.

Nobody owns a parking space, so I would think to myself that the person was an asshole for taking a spot that I was obviously waiting for, and then I'd find myself a new space.

And why is race brought into everything? I know you said you only included it because people would ask, OP, but what planet do those people live on that there aren't rude, nutty people of every race?

If it is a crowded parking lot and you have been waiting for a spot, signal on, then someone zooming in to take it is a rude asshole. It's tantamount to butting in line. I don't see how the driver of the second car could have asked anything if the other car was there first. However, unlike the standing in line situation, where it is reasonable to ask someone not to butt in and indicate the back of the line, I don't think I'd bother to say anything to the person in the parking lot. Just easier to give them the stink eye and go find another spot.

I think often times there is an assumption that the way people look and the way people act coincide. It is a judgmental area, after all! But, people do NOT always act the way you think they will!

I would be PISSED if I were waiting for a spot and as I was pulling in someone took it. Don't care if the driver "promised" it. But driving and parking brings out the assholes of the world (I'm sometimes one of them). You gotta just learn to let things go and not get all road-ragey over it.

Suck it up and find another spot. Wouldn't kill you to walk a few extra steps. It does suck, and it IS rude, but engaging total strangers in parking lots (especially ones that are already aggressive) is a mistake.

Just read the CP Ikea post. WHAT IF you are waiting for a spot (blinker on, perpendicular to departing vehicle) and someone "zooms" past you to take the spot? The aisle is wide enough to have both cars waiting, but you were there first and the other car sped up (rather loudly screeching) past you to steal the spot. Driver of car #2 claims "oh, I asked the (parked car driver, while he was walking to car) and he said I could have it." WHAT?! I think this is probably an easy one, since no one "owns" that spot to grant it lease to the first party waiting, but I thought I would ask.
