I don't want one of those travel mugs where you can't seem to get the threads straight to screw on the lid.
I don't want one of those mega plastic kinds with the snap on covers that are impossible to open when stopped in traffic.
I don't want one of those mugs with the supposed leak-proof lids that end up turning into a science experiment when they are not cleaned properly.

I just want a simple travel mug that will hold 12 ounces of coffee, keep it hot, and won't spill all over my clothes/car.

Recommendations?

I also had the Oxo for years. It leaked. Also, it did not keep my coffee hot.

Here is the deal with this mug: You fill with hot water for a few minutes, then you fill with coffee to the line (DO NOT FILL OVER THE LINE, it will leak), put the top on, and you have hot coffee for hours. I mean my coffee made at 6am is actually still luke warm at least by 4:00 pm.

It won't leak. I generally carry mine on its side in my purse.

10:34 here - this is exactly what I have. I have two. No leaks. I keep it in my bag with my computer, files, everything.

Thanks for all the great recommendations. I just ordered the Thermos Nissan from Amazon. I'll report back after testing it out.

OP here -- reporting back on the Thermos Nissan travel mug. I have used it daily this week and . . . I absolutely agree with the PPs that said this is THE mug.

It does not leak.

It has a lid that doesn't cross-thread like many of those other mugs.

It keeps coffee hot for a LONG time.

I can drink it in the car without spilling all over the place -- and it fits nicely in my cup holder.

I can also close it up and put it sideways in my lunch bag.

Absolutely fabulous mug!

Thank you for all the responses and recommendations for what many would perceive to be a minor need.

Hand wash only, but you can unscrew the seal under the lid (connects to the button on top) so you can actually wash underneath it! I always hated how travel mugs eventually get a a funky odor due to the places you can't clean very well.

OP here -- thanks for the recommendation. I have three of these and they all leak.

PP here. The only time I've had it "leak" is when I un-popped the button (i.e. sealed it) after taking a sip, with it still tilted sideways a little. Coffee gets stuck above the seal (under the lid) and it will seem like it's leaking it you tilt it sideways again.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Yes, I'm looking foe the "toss it in the bag and it'll be fine" kind.

Yes, it can be hand wash only. This is my travel mug and not DH's.

Costco has Contigo, 2 for $20 or something. DH is happy with them.

Thermos Nissan backpack bottle - you tap a button to pop the lid off. If you are throwing it into your bag, you can use the additional fastener. I pack my coffee at 6:30 am and even if I leave it open and sip all day, it's hot at 2:00 pm. If I keep it closed it's even hotter.

We love the Contigo mugs, West Loop.

http://www.gocontigo.com/travel-mugs.html

Had them for two years and still great. I did buy them because of the leakproof lids though - I used to bike to work and I needed a mug I could toss into my pannier bag and not worry about.

I am searching for The Travel Mug -- the one to put my coffee in before heading to work.

I don't want one of those travel mugs where you can't seem to get the threads straight to screw on the lid.
