Vanilla is safe but I usually make sure there's enough chocolate for all the kids (cupcakes in both flavors or half choc/half vanilla cake).

I let my kids decide. Sometimes they pick their favorite. Some years they have opted for part chocolate and part vanilla because they know some kids don't like one or the other. I don't push them either way.

Either half and half or I let birthday kid choose (and FWIW, she just chose vanilla/vanilla).

Vanilla or at least half vanilla. There are a lot ( surprIsingky) of kids who dont like chocolate

This year I made a cake that chocolate on one side and vanilla on the other, then I marbled the middle. Everyone was happy. Every time I have made just chocolate, there is at least one kid that is allergic and is pissed because because he (it is almost always a he) doesn't get cake.

I once made two identical cakes, one vanilla and one chocolate. Almost all the kids wanted chocolate and those who didn't get any and had to settle for vanilla were pissed. Won't make that mistake again.

I've also seen half chocolate, half vanilla cakes/cupcakes.

I get what my kid wants. For little kids too young to have an opinion, I'd get vanilla.
