This. It's a slippery slope to just assume that they were fired only because they were black. Among other things, if they were fired for this reason, that would leave the company and this man open to a lawsuit for wrongful termination/discrimination. He would have to be able to show some evidence as to why he felt justified in firing them.
As to wether his attitude made them perform less than their best? It's certainly possible, but if I were in a situation like that, I would not wait to be fired. Operating under management that has clearly racist views, enough so that if was affecting my work negatively, would not be a tenable situation for me.
