A friend of mine (female) came to visit once in our new home. I was showing her the master, when I turned around and she was sitting on the toilet, peeing, still chatting about the tile.

Different standards, I guess.

I gotta think he's doing you a favor. He's either really loud or really smelly or both. Give him the privacy he wants.

As for the snooping, why not plant something that will really get them talking? Serious, hardcore porn or some wildly bizarre sex toy....

Totally weird. To PP whose husband does it - really? He walks through their bedroom and goes to the master bathroom? I'd definitely tell him to quit that. I'd be pissed if someone did it to me.

OP here - exactly! It's not a privacy thing, because if that were the case, he'd go downstairs to the basement, which is much more secluded.

As for snooping, MIL has that market cornered. She seems to have stopped now that I place notes to her in my drawers, like "HI MIL - Find what you're looking for?"

Build him an outhouse as far away from the main house as possible, or lock your bedroom door.

Damn...that sounds brutal. Sorry you're going through this. But still, ask permission before barging into someone's master bathroom. Besides, wouldn't the basement provide just as much privacy?

Gosh OP it's for privacy. Maybe he's got intestinal issues and doesn't want people to hear or smell his business. Have a heart!

My husband does this in other people's homes, too. I think he's looking for a little more privacy, and has always been surprised (every time, as if I'd never mentioned it before!) when I suggest that venturing into more private spaces in a hosts home is an imposition that's worse than having everyone hear him tinkle.

He probably wants to use the bathroom farthest from the beaten path so to speak. It allows him the most privacy and it is less likely that you will return to the bathroom in your room throughout the day when there are others closer to use. Not saying it's okay, it's just my theory.

Wow, why not make him go to the gas station down the road?! He wants privacy. People are free to poop in whatever bathroom they choose in my house. It is your FIL, cut him some slack. He will die soon enough.

Ha! I don't even like it when my husband poops in the master bathroom, esepcially when he knows I have to use it to get ready in the morning!

But, back to you. That's really weird, frankly. So strange that I don't know if it even qualifies as rude. Maybe he is claustrophic and likes big bathrooms? Regardless, I would find it weird and annoying!

I find this so irritating. We don't have a huge house, but have 3.5 baths. 2 upstairs, including master, 1/2 on main level and bathroom in basement. It's not a matter of the master toilet being the only one available. He goes out of his way to go upstairs, into our room and use our toilet....to poop almost every time they are here, which is frequent since they are only 30 mins away. Not only do I find it a violation of our privacy to go into our room/bathroom, but the fact that he poops makes it even more insulting. WTF! I would never use someones master bathroom, unless it was a dire emergency, all other toilets were occupied, or during large family holiday gatherings when my hosts have offered the use of their shower. This is how it is in my family. Are we unusual, or would others find this irritating as well?
