I'm planning a 'date' with 4.5 year old DS to the Melting Pot over the holidays - We'll do cheese and chocolate (maybe just the latter ), I think he'll love it!

I don't anticipate any issues with the pointy forks (we use pointy forks and butter knives every night at dinner, don't you!?) or the burners (he's pretty good at - 'it's hot, don't touch').

Actually I think/hope it's a great kid-choice for a 'nice' resturant - very little waiting, sitting quietly required!!

Oh, for heavens sake....all meat starts out raw!! Did you know that?

Well yeah, but I don't often allow my child within arm's reach of raw meat, sharp objects and boiling liquid all at the same time. And they have to give you a little briefing about not putting the raw meat on the plate you're going to eat from, etc. Some kids might not really *get* that part.

You can do it for them and use a fork. They have high chairs that keep kids away from the burners and a lot of different table combinations. You don't have to eat meat there. You can just do cheese, salads, chocolate or the vegetarian meal. They also have slotted spoons that you can use to put stuff in, scoop out.

We have take our little one. The Melting Pots are very family friendly but its probably to better to go an off day/earlier. We sometimes do just cheese, salad and chocolate. They have a vegetarian meal option that is good and broths vs. oil.

OP here. I'm guessing she meant do only cheese fondue (with bread and vegetables) rather than meat in hot oil. The raw meat part isn't an issue for us since we're vegetarians, but I hadn't thought of the heat-and-sharp-stuff angle. Maybe that's part of why DC likes the idea of fondue. Hmmm. . . . Thanks for all the replies!

There are Melting Pots all over the place. Arlington and Reston come to mind in VA. Have not yet taken kids there though - not even my 5 year old. Too much potential for disaster with long, sharp pointed objects, boiling hot cheese, steam, hot plates, etc.

The Melting Pot at Dupont. Think there's also one out in the suburbs as well... not sure where... Rockville?

Is there a good fondue restaurant anywhere in the area? DC is intrigued by the idea of fondue. Thanks!
