We have had them in our basement for 7 years. They have not come up, the edges remain in tact. They are thinner than a regular carpet but for us its the best option. Our cats destroy everything with more pile. Our only issue was when we did pull them up to re-do the flooring underneath they left a gummy residue. It wasn't a problem since we were replacing the tile underneath but I would have been upset if it were nice hard wood floors. We bought extra squares for any mishaps and so far have only had to replace one or two. They clean easily and installing was a breeze. We liked the colors and fun you can have with the product. They have been regularly vacuum and still no fraying.

I bought them for a hallway runner because 1) the hall is ~25 feet long and it was the most cost-effective solution and 2) our dog isn't reliably housetrained and sometimes pees at the end of the hall. For dog clean up purposes, they're great. I can lift up the peed-on tile(s) and wash them in the tub and let them air-dry outside. However, mine is in a pattern with a full square in the middle and a quarter tile on either side. They are ALWAYS coming apart. ALWAYS. It drives me nuts. No matter how many times I restick them, another couple have gaps. I want to like them so much more than I actually do.

The only way I would even consider ordering Flor again would be for a rug that would go under a table, and all of the outside pieces would be held in place by the table. E.g. a dining room table, where Flor would be good because you can clean individual tiles in the event of a spill. But honestly, I doubt I'll ever buy it again.

Just wanted to add--it took about 8 months before I tossed them. Disappointing for how much we paid.

I don't really like mine. We use it as an area rug, and DS likes to hopscotch on it, so the pieces are coming apart. That's fixable, but what bothers me more is that the edges look frayed, and they've looked like that from day 1. I think if you installed them wall-to-wall, you'd eliminate both problems. But others are right that they are not soft or cushioney, which obviously is the trade off for getting something washable.

I would encourage you to go on line and order samples. I did, and I was disappointed with how thin and hard they were. There was one wool one that was softer, but it was about $40 per tile, and I have a fairly large area to cover. I have cold hard tile in my basement, and I don't like the fact that you can't put a pad underneath it. They say the pad is incorporated into the tile, but it doesn't provide much in the way of cushion.

That said, I could see doing some fun things with color/design if you had a very modern house.

We have some in my son's room and they're pretty awful. They keep coming detached from one another, are fraying at the edges and are very hard. I could have gotten a nicer area rug for cheaper.

We have them in the play area of our living room for our new walker, and they stay put better than a regular rug.

They now sell a few hallway runners with pre-cut 1/2 tiles.

I don't think they feel as nice as an area rug and they are more expensive

I totally disagree with the pp. They are thin and not cushy but they are made to be commercial grade and I have had some for 8 years that are still in great shape. I did however have to tape them together to make an area rug as after about 5 years they lost the sticky spots on the back. As an interior designer I use the commercial line all of the time and they have been in the business longer than and other carpet tile manufacturer and if you are at all sustainable they are the way to go as they are made of recycled content and can be recycled when you are done with them.

Cons: Most of the designs are fairly ugly, they will start to fray after about a year of vacuuming, and you can probably get a better quality rug for less at IKEA.

Pros: the installation is easy and the carpet stays in place pretty well (unless you try to move it). You also have total flexibility in the layout of the tiles, so you might consider it if you have an unusual-shaped space you are trying to cover. But if you are just looking for a simple area rug, you have better options elsewhere.

They are $$$ for what you get and not that well made. Fine if you are renting or for a basement.

I'm thinking about buying some Flor carpet tiles to make an area rug for my living room but have no experience with them at all. Can you share your thoughts if you have used them before?

Do the squares and overall area rug that they make really stay put? If you've used them as an area rug with a coffee table, have any of the tiles loosened up around where the feet of the table hold down adjacent squares? Have you had any problem ordering replacement tiles if you can't get stains out of one of them? Do they feel soft to walk on? The brochure says that you don't need to use rug pads, but I've found that they can add a nice cushion feel to a very thin area rug.

Thanks!
