i should clarify my employment status. while I condsider myself a "contractor", I am a FTE at my current company, which provides resources to company A. My company has essential agreed to resource my time to Company A for the allotted time of the contract. After the contract is up, I would still be emplpyed and resourced to a different project/company. Thus my salary of 117k, is considered to be one of an FTE. i work in big pharma, and am in project management. I don' t know if the sheds additional light on my status.

I am considering coming back at 117 and explaing that I don't want to take a pay cut. etc.

salary negotiations are not just a generic number, there are many factors, such as what type of job it is, what industry etc... we need to know more information, what type of job is it? what is your experience level, degrees etc... its not just black and white

Also in general you will be making 30% less as a full time salaried employee than what you would make as a consultant, here is the formula

I do lots of hiring and will say that we pretty much always offer contractors in the six figure range $10K - $15K LESS than what they are making as consultants. Why? Overhead, cost of recruiting or bringing them on, etc. Also, consultants command a bit more per hour because of the inherent risk involved in being freelance.

They are offering you a signing bonus that will probably keep your annual income in Year One the same as it is now. If you get a raise at the beginning of Year Two, you'll be sitting pretty. If it's a good firm with an opportunity for advancement and a clear annual review policy in place, I would be recommend you push for $115K and leave it at that.

wait for an answer. No matter do not speak next.

If they tell you it is firm, you say thank you, I will accept.

If they tell you anything other than it is firm, you tell them that you're not trying to get into a negotiation over salary per se, but that you had previously been paid $117K and were hoping for something a tiny bit better.

I'll bet you they end up paying you $120K. At which point you emphatically say thank you. You really appreciate it.

Counter with 117. "I recognize this is a great opportunity and I'm so excited to come on as a regular FTE, but I can't take less than what I'm making now."

I am currently a contractor for company A. I have been there 7 months or so. I have interviewed and been offered a full time position at company A. The company is currently very short staffed. I have assumed a large work load in my time there...probably the work for two FTEs. I indicated I wanted 125k on my application. I currently make 117k base salary They offered 112k base salary with signing bonus. I am not a good poker player. My husband thinks it insane that I would even consider taking a pay cut. The career development oppurtunites at this company are good and the benefits good. What should I counter with?
